G(caps)rowing hollyhocks (Alcea rosea) in the garden is the goal of many gardeners who remember these impressive flowers from their youth. The flower stalks on hollyhocks can reach heights of 9 feet tall! They can tower above a garden, adding a lovely vertical element to your yard. Let’s look at a few tips on hollyhocks to help you grow them in your yard. How to grow Hollyhocks The first thing to understand is how to plant hollyhocks. Hollyhocks need full sun and moist, rich, well drained soil. The mistake many novice hollyhock growers make is to plant this flower in soil that is too dry. If you are planting seeds, sow the seeds outside about a week before last frost. If you are planting seedlings out, wait about two to three weeks after last frost. Hollyhock seeds only need to be planted right below the soil, no more than 1/4-inch deep. Hollyhock plants should be about 2 feet apart to grow well. You can also plant bare root hollyhocks.

Black Hollyhock (Alcea rosea)

A perfect choice for cottage gardens, the Black Hollyhock can be seen on farms and in many home gardens. It is popularly used as a backdrop plant and can be planted along fences as well. For a gorgeous contrast, try planting Black Hollyhock in front of a white fence, or along the perimeter of your white house.

Black Hollyhock is a gorgeous, deep mahogany colored flower which blooms through the summer months. The plants stand to a towering height of roughly 60 inches tall, displaying several, almost black blooms along its erect stems.
Grown as a biennial flowering plant, Black Hollyhock will grow quickly, establishing a deep root system. The plants will then wilt on the surface due to the freezing temperatures of winter, later returning the following spring. Biennials such as this are known to flower the second year. You can however achieve blooms in the first growing season, if the plants are started early enough.

Double Majorette Hollyhock Mixture (Alcea rosea)

Grow a garden filled with the gorgeous Double Majorette Hollyhock, from freshly harvested Alcea rosea flower seeds. Double Majorette will produce a blend of Carnation like flowers, in shades of red, yellow, pink & even a dark mahogany. The blooms trail along erect stems, which measure a good 30 to 36 inches tall. Double Majorette is a more dwarf variety of Hollyhock, making it easier to place in the garden. They can be grown in flower beds, or used as a border plant. They are also popularly used in butterfly gardens, along fences & driveways, or as a backdrop plant as well.

White Double Hollyhock Flower Seeds
