How to Collect Papaya Seeds
- You can cut the papaya in half and scrape out the seeds
- A single papaya fruit will yield several hundred seeds.
- Dry the seeds in a shady place. Once they are totally dry, you can use them for plantation.
How To Plant The Seeds
You will be able to know which trees are female and which are male only once they start to flower. This is why you should always have more than one papaya tree.

- Fill a plastic pot with sterile potting soil and sprinkle the seeds on the top.
- Plant your seeds in about 1 cm of depth. If you plant too deep, the seeds will slowly germinate or will not germinate at all!
- Cover the seeds with 1/2 inch of soil.
- Water thoroughly after planting, but do not soak to the point that standing water forms on the soil. Try to keep the soil slightly damp, but not soggy.
- Place the pot in a shaded area for good germination.
- Keep average soil moisture, not too dry or too moist.
- Approximately two to five weeks after planting your seeds, many of the seeds will germinate, and emerge through the soil surface as seedlings.
- Soon you will notice that your seedlings are very different in size.
- Start removing the weaker ones.
- After about two weeks, determine which seedlings to keep. Pull out the smallest seedlings, along with any seedlings that appear withered, spotted, or unhealthy.
- Once you have chosen your most successful, good-looking plants, move on to the section on transplanting in single pots.
- Some of the newly transplanted papaya seedling may appear wilted or slightly deformed shortly after transplanting, don't worry they may recover nicely soon. Continue to water them regularly until the plants are established.
- Water thoroughly and monitor the moisture levels by keeping the soil damp but not soggy as the seedlings grows to increase the amount of water supply to the plants.
