Starting Ornamental Cabbage Indoors

Starting Ornamental cabbage indoors is so easy if you give the seeds the right condition to grow.

• Start seeds indoors 5 to 10 weeks before the last frost in spring. 

• Fill a plastic pot with a sterile starting mix. 

• Sow your Cabbage seeds ½ inch deep.

• Cover the seeds and water thoroughly.

• The Seeds are quick sprouting. They take 5 to 10 days to sprout, "Sprouting is the natural process by which seeds or spores germinate and put out shoots".

• Once the seeds have sprouted, be sure to keep the soil lightly moist.

• A fluorescent light for around 14 to 16 hours a day is ideal for the fastest growth, as the seedlings must receive plenty of light, so they don't get leggy!

• Keep the seedlings just a few inches below the light.

• A south-facing window will be fine, if you don't have fluorescent lighting.

• The seedlings need water when the surface of the soil begins to become dry, the soil in the pot should never be allowed to dry out completely.

• Always check the moisture level by touching it with your finger at least once a day, and you'll probably need to water, as it's important to keep your seedlings moist.

• As soon as the second set of true leaves appear. Transplant the strongest seedlings into single pots, this will help ensure a healthy root system and top-quality ornamental cabbage transplants for your garden.

• In order to give your ornamental cabbage new plants the best chance of success, it is best to ‘harden them off’. About 5 days before planting your seedlings outdoors, help acclimate them to temperatures, sunlight, and wind. This is the process of hardening off, or gradually acclimating your new plants to outdoor conditions. With proper hardening off, they’ll have an easier transition to the garden, and you will have strong and healthy ornamental cabbage plants.
