How to take cuttings from an established rosemary plant
- Select healthy stems with fresh growth.
Taking cuttings:
- You can use scissors or pruning shears and cut the rosemary stem about 5 to 6-inches back from a fresh growing tip.
- Grasp your fingers around the stem, and gently strip off the lower 2-inches of needles from the stem of the cutting.
- Put the stems in a jar of water and place the jar in a warm place away from direct sunlight.
- You have to change the water every couple days, always replace the water with room temperature water. As the fresh water provides dissolved oxygen and prevents the cuttings from rotting.
. The rosemary stem cuttings should grow roots in 2 or 3 weeks, depending on the temperature. It can take longer in colder temperatures.
- Pot up the stem cuttings once roots develop.
- Fill a 3-inch pot half with slightly damp potting soil. Place rosemary cutting in the pot with care to avoid damaging the roots. Cover gently and water thoroughly.
