S(caps)tarting ornamental cabbage from seeds is easy, and repotting seedlings in single pots is not particularly difficult. Ornamental cabbage is easily grown from seed, but must be started by midsummer to be ready for fall planting. With some simple steps, you can have your seedlings well on their way to impressive outdoor fall and winter blooms.
Repotting Ornamental Cabbage Seedlings
Once your ornamental cabbage seeds have sprouted, and have developed their true leaves, you will want to transplant them to larger pots. To do this, you must be very careful not to disturb the root system. Damaging the roots of your plants at any stage in their life can be detrimental to them. Transplanting indoor seedlings into larger containers is an important step, so they have the nutrients and the space they need to grow strong and healthy until they go outdoors in your garden.
- Fill your pots with good quality potting soil to the top.
- With a bamboo cane stick, make holes in the center of the pots.
- Use a dabbler or a spoon to remove the seedling from the pot as gently as possible, disturbing the root ball as little as possible. Don’t remove, shake or brush the soil from the roots. The less they’re bothered, the better.
- Gently tease seedling roots apart from one another. If your ornamental cabbage seedlings are extremely root bound, loosen some of the smaller roots on the outside of the root ball. This will encourage them to spread out in their new home.
- Gently set the seedling down into the new pot.
- Lightly pack soil around the stem, making sure the roots are completely covered. Don't bury your seedlings any deeper than they were in the pots they came in.
- Water the seedlings to help them re-establish their root systems.
- Keep your seedlings in the shade and out of direct line winds for a few days until they recover from repotting.
- Gradually introduce your seedlings to more sun and wind over the next few weeks to get them ready to go into the garden.
- Take extra time to harden off your seedlings before putting them in the garden permanently.
