This aromatic herb has a long history of medicinal use dating back to ancient Egypt. In addition to acting as a natural sedative, chamomile possesses antibacterial, anti fungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antispasmodic, and antiviral properties. Chamomile produces small, sweetly aromatic, daisy-like flowers. As a medicinal, chamomile is commonly used to make a relaxing and aromatic tea to ease gastrointestinal complaints and reduce stress.

There are two kinds of chamomile

Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) 

German chamomile (Matricaria recutita)

Roman chamomile

It is also known as Russian chamomile and English chamomile. It is a creeping ground cover that grows like a mat. It has small daisy like flowers with yellow centers and white petals. The leaves are feathery. It is a perennial.

German chamomile

German chamomile is native to Europe, North Africa, and some parts of Asia. It is closely related to the Roman chamomile, which has the same medicinal properties as German chamomile. looks similar to Roman chamomile, with the differences being that German chamomile grows upright to the height of about 1 to 2 feet and is a reseeding annual. Chamomile bushes have blooms with small white flowers with large yellow centers (like small daisies) and it has a distinctive apple-like aroma when in bloom.  

Chamomile is a wonderful herb for relaxation, which is why chamomile tea is so popular as an evening tea. One of my favorite tea is chamomile, especially my home grown, After hours working in the garden it’s great to sit back and relax with a cup of chamomile tea. Chamomile is an amazing herb that must be grown in every herb garden so that we can utilize its many benefits. Besides its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal benefits, chamomile improves the growth and flavor of many plants. I hope these reasons to grow chamomile will inspire you to grow some yourself!
