How to plant tulip bulbs in pots

You will need:
. High quality tulip bulbs
. Good quality potting mix
. 8-12 inch pots
These are my simple steps, but very important to consider if you want to extend the blooming and avoid diseases!
. Make sure there are adequate drainage holes in the pot, as Tulip bulbs must never sit in waterlogged soil, or they will rot!
. Put a layer of gravel at the bottom of pots for drainage. The main reason for adding gravel to improve drainage in pots is because most plants don't do well in soggy soil and excessive moisture results in rot and other deadly diseases which can kill the plants!
. Fill the pot with good quality potting mix.
. Plant the bulbs at a depth of approximately three times the height of the bulbs. Make sure the pointy side of the bulb is facing up!
- Fill the soil level to 2-3 cm below the lip of the pot to allow space for watering.
- Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
- After the initial watering, let them root. They typically will not need additional watering until you see some sprout development.
- For the most compact growth, precool Tulip pots for 30 days in a location where the temperature is 55 degrees F. Until the leaves appear! After this precooling period, little green leaf should be visible. So at that moment move your pots to a bright location that averages 65 degree F.
This combination of coolness and brightness will yield the best Tulip plants.
Tulips flowers care
. Always keep the soil in the pot moist and fertilize every two weeks with a complete 20-20-20 fertilizer.
. Once the bulb starts to grow, you need to keep watering every week or, and never let them dry. The most common reason bulbs don’t perform in pots is that they have dried out during their growth process.
. Always remember that pots dry out much faster than garden soil, and they need to be watered on a more regular basis. Water your Tulip plants whenever the soil is dry, but not too much during the entire growth phase.
. Lovely Tulip blossoms should appear three to four months after planting.
. Tulips bloom in the spring, but the flowering season can be prolonged by growing retarded bulbs. For a succession of blooms, plant Narcissus bulbs every couple of weeks until December!
