Garlic is very easy and rewarding crop to grow. It’s incredibly versatile in the kitchen, has great health properties and can propagate itself for years to come. There are a lot of decisions to make when choosing garlic!
Hardneck or Softneck, many cloves or few, mild flavor or spicy! The question is which type of garlic to plant and how? Once you have decided which garlic you will grow, and how much, you can begin to plant and enjoy all its benefits.
Hardneck Garlic
🛒 Fresh Siberian Hardneck Garlic Bulb for Planting and Growing 🛒
This large-bulbed purple striped garlic. Probably originated in Siberia. It is perhaps the most beautiful of all garlic bulbs. It grows strong plants, with just a few very large cloves. The clove skins themselves are dark brown in color, but the insides are creamy white with LOTS of heat. Loves cold weather.
Planting Depth:
Plant individual cloves with the scab end down and the pointed end up, one to two inches deep in well-worked beds.
Spacing:
4" apart in same row. Place 36" between separate rows.

Full Sun When to Plant:Plant 4–6 weeks before frost. Early-mid Spring. Will develop in spring. Or plant in spring for mid-late summer harvest.

About Siberian Garlic
Siberian garlic is mid-season garlic and a great producer in both warm and cold climates. The cloves of this garlic are protected by an attractive light purplish-red skin. With mild garlic flavor, Siberian garlic is perfect in light stir-fries, dips, sauces, or soups where only a hint of creamy garlic flavor is desired. Great variety for those who prefer a subtle approach to garlic flavor.
Siberian Garlic vs. Regular Garlic
Siberian has one of the highest concentrations of allicin when compared to other garlic varieties. This lovely garlic has large white bulbs which are usually streaked with pink to purple. Smaller bulbs tend to have more color than larger bulbs.
🛒 German Exra Hardy Garlic 🛒
Plant cloves 1–2 inches deep in the fall after the first hard frost for a summer harvest and keep them well mulched over the winter, space your plants or seeds 4–8 inches apart in well fertilized soil.
Keep in mind that Hardneck garlic varieties tend to do best in colder climates as they are more winter hardy!
Softneck Garlic
Softneck garlic varieties (Allium sativum var. sativum) are the best to grow if you live in a milder climate. They grow better in environments with warmer winters because they do not require cold exposure to make bulbs. Softneck varieties tend to store better than hardnecks because of their dense heads and tightly wrapped cloves.

This is likely the most commonly grown variety in the U.S., and for good reason. It is a large, easy to grow softneck, with a nice mild flavor and have excellent storage ability. The skins are a nice off-white with a purple blush, and it produces 8–10 cloves per head.
🛒 Elephant Garlic 🛒
Elephant Garlic enormous bulbs weigh up to 1 lb.! Has a milder, mellower flavor. Elephant garlic prefers a long, cool growing season and is best planted in early fall. You can harvest enormous bulbs that are up to 4" wide and 3" long!
Delicious mild flavor. The flavor is milder than garlic, and much more palatable to some people than garlic when used raw, as in salads.
