Identifying the flowers

Passion fruit flowers bloom sequentially as the vines grow, from early spring to mid-summer. they opens in the morning, closes at dusk, and lasts only for one day. The flowers are self-fertile due to the flower morphology, being structured so that the anthers are placed below the stigmas. Look for open flowers that have a visible stigma, and anthers that are yellow and full of pollen.

Collecting the pollen

Gently tap the anthers with a small brush, cotton swab, or your finger to collect the yellow pollen. You can also use a clean, dry artist's paintbrush to gently brush against the anthers to gather the pollen.

Transferring the pollen to the flower stigma

Locate another open flower, and gently brush the collected pollen onto the sticky, receptive stigma in the center of the flower. Always make sure to cover the entire stigma with pollen.

Repeat the pollen transfer process for each open flower you want to pollinate. It's best to do this in the morning when the flowers are fully open and receptive.

Protecting the pollinated flowers

After hand pollinating, protect the pollinated flowers by covering them with a small mesh bag. This will prevent insects from interfering with the pollination process and increase the chances of successful fruit set.

You need to know that yellow passion flowers won't fruit unless the pollen they are exposed to comes from a different passion fruit vine!

By doing these simple steps, you can increase your chance of fruit set and enjoy a bountiful passion fruit harvest.
